CBR or VBR - What's the difference?

$

CBR is Constant Bit Rate, VBR is Variable Bit Rate. In a CBR MPEG stream the encoder uses the same amount of bits for every second of video. So if you set it to CBR with a bit rate of 5Mb/s all of the video will be encoded using 5 megabits per second. For some sections this will be enough, other sections could have been better with more bits per second (because they are more difficult to compress - e.g. lots of motion), while others could have used less bits and still look good (easy to compress - e.g. a shot from a tripod with almost no movement in the subject matter).

With a VBR encoding at 5Mb/s, the 5Mb/s would be the average bit rate. You would also set a maximum (and a minimum) bit rate. For the hard to encode sections the encoder will use more than 5Mb/s, for the easy material it will use less. But as the average is 5Mb/s, the resulting file will be the same size as the CBR one - i.e. it will take up the same amount of space on the DVD.

The advantage of VBR is that it uses the available space more efficiently. As it can use more bits per second for the difficult stuff there will be less artifacts in the MPEG-2 video.

Set top player compatibility should be the same for CBR and VBR. If you want to maximize compatibility for writable DVDs it may help to keep the total audio plus video bit rate at or below a maximum of 7Mb/s.

As many set top players have at least some problems reading DVD±R discs they will encounter read errors from time to time. If the read error exceeds the error correction the player will have to reread the information. While the player is reading again, the video will keep playing from the decoder's buffer. But as the size of this buffer is limited, it will be empty at some point. The higher the bit rate, the sooner the buffer will run dry. When that happens playback will stutter, stall or fail completely.

By using a moderate bit rate, you are giving the player more of a chance to recover from read errors. 7Mb/s isn't a magical figure, it is just a general recommendation - weighing image quality against compatibility.

If you know that the player used has no problems with writable DVDs you can ignore this advice. The same is true if your end product is going to be a pressed/replicated DVD.

Where is Encore with the Creative Cloud? It is not in the list of 'apps' to download.

As the subject says, there is no link in my App manager at all for Encore.  I thought it was a part of the CC or am I mistaken.  Thanks.

Everytime I try to burn my video to disc (blu-ray) i keep getting the same error code. I've even started the project from scratch numerous times, I've re'edited the footage before sending to compressor 4 and yet still the same results,

"Blu-ray Error: "device error", Code "3", Note: "CreateStcSequence: Fail to write M25 File."

Does anyone have a solution to what this problem is as Adobe technical support have been hopeless with this matter? thanks

Very Poor Resolution in Titles

Hello,

my titles are such poor quality.  very disappointing.  Can't be described as professional in any way.

My original source material in premiere pro was 24p, 1920 x 1080.  File was imported into Encore in Standard Def format, smaller and apparently still 24p.

Thoughts?

Thanks,

BD menu with transitions between pages?

$

Hello,

Can someone tell me if A) it is possible to have a transition video as I navigate from one page to another in a multiple page menu. and B) If it is posible to have a transition video between pages, is there some documentation somewhere that would help guide me through the creation process?

For example, Let's say I have a 21 second video for my menus. On page one I want the video to loop from the 5 second point to the 10 second point. Then if I select page 2 the video should play from 10 seconds to 11 seconds and then loop from 11 seconds to 21 seconds. If I select the first page Encore would play the video from 21 seconds to 22 seconds then loop from 5 seconds to 10 seconds.

If this is possible, or if there is a different way to accomplish this please let me know.

Thanks,

Lou

blu-ray Object: "....", Export file not found

Running Encore CS 6 on Cloud on Mac. I have succesfully built several Blu-ray discs from the same file. Each file contains slideshows that worked fine in the past. After making a few changes I got this message: Blu-ray Object: "....", Export file not found

I have created simple new files with only a couple of menu options, but with the slideshow and get the same crash.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Extremely Slow Menu Rendering - Only Using 5-20% CPU

Every time I edit a 1920x1080 menu in Encore, it takes forever to render out menus.  A 30 second scene menu can take up to 4 hours to render out.  By comparison, when rendering h.264 videos out of Premiere with numerous effects, I can render a 2 hour 1080p video out in a shorter amount of time.

When rendering using AME, all of my 8 CPU threads are maxed out at 100%.

This is what Task Manager looks like when I'm rendering menus in Encore:

Is there anything I can do to get these menus to render faster?

Thanks.

I keep getting this error message about 11gb into burning a 22gb Blu-ray. "Blu-ray Error: "device error", Code "3", Note: "CreateStcSequence: Fail to write M25 File." I have tried just about everything from running as administrator, starting a new project and changing the disc too. I am using CS6 and going crazy... any ideas?

Error msg: Software to decode not on system

I am working on an Encore project. I created the project, imported audio/video to a timeline, saved it and closed it. I'm now attempting to reopen it, and I get this error msg: "The software that's used to decode the media is not available on this sytem. Installing the correct decoders for the files you are working with may help to correct the problem." Say what, I just created this project, worked on it for awhile, it seemed fine. What decoders are they talking about. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks,

button layer?

$

I am trying to create a DVD and the tutorial talks about importing a Photoshop created image for a menu, with button layers.

So I go to Photoshop CS4 to try to figure out what that is and get nowhere.

Then I try "button" in the Photoshop search, and it talks about button layers and such, but I can't find out what this is or how to create them.

It is almost as though certain things about these programs are supposed to be known by instinct, so they are not bothered to be explained. Extremel;y frustrating.

Hi, whenever I try to make a PAL DVD in Encore it stretches the video vertically slightly, this doesn't occur when I make a PAL Bluray, any help would be greatly appreciated as I can't seem to get around it.

Encore CS4 not comaptible with Windows 7?

I just installed Windows 7 Ultimate (which I'll probably regret later) and put my CS4 Master Collection 30 day trial on it.

Encore launches and I get the "This program has known compatibility issues" B.S. from Windows. The program will still run if I tell Windows to run it, but it's awful frustrating that Everytime Windows makes a new OS or SP release, suddenly everything but Office, Internet Explorer, and Windows Media Player is incompatible.

Anyone else seen this error, or is everyone still using Vista or XP?

Can Encore CS6 import multi-channel audio (5.1 LPCM)?

$

We're considering upgrading from CS5 to CS6 at my work.  Since Encore CS6 trial is non-functional, can anyone confirm yes/no that Encore can import multi-channel audio (5.1 LPCM, 5.1 AC3 from standalone encoders - not the Surcode plugin, etc.)?  It would be great not to have to use tsMuxer to get 5.1 LPCM BDs authored.

My current workflow involves creating 5.1 LPCM .wav files using another application (Cubase).  This multichannel .wav file imports fine into Premiere CS5 and is recognized as 5.1.  When I try to import the same .wav file into Encore, I get an error that reads, "Could not import file ...More than two audio channels for this type of encoding is not supported."

Thanks in advance.

Photoshop file error-1

While working in Encore CS6, I was editing a menu in Photoshop CS6, saved the photoshop file, then went back to Encore and I received this error: "Photoshop file error-1".  It wouldn't go away and I had to close the program to make it go away.  I rebooted and opened the Encore file again and the error is still showing up and won't let me proceed.

New CS6 Encore User Missing Library Content

I am a new CS6 user and just signed up for the Creative Cloud subscription and downloaded/installed Pro Premire and Encore.  I have a DVD project that is due Monday and there are no assets in the Encore Library for creating menus?

Where is that content ?

Buttons disappear after burning from Disk Image.

After saving a project in Encore CS4 to disk image, when I burn this disk image to a DVD using either Toast

or disk utility, the menu buttons disappear. The rest of the project is intact. The menu background is there, the

video itself is burnt correctly on the DVD. But, the buttons and the navigation that would have come with the

buttons is gone.

I would appreciate any clues or suggestions.

thanks

Mpeg-2 vs. .mp4 for a DVD, .mp4 is much clearer

$

When exporting a .mp4 to a mpeg-2 for encore to make a DVD i notice the file

becomes 4 times as big and about 1/5 as clear....it really degrades.

I do remmember reading that Encore can take .mp4 right into the timeline. Is this true?

Can i just drag the high quality .mp4 right into encores timeline for the making of the DVD?

It has audio attached in the file as well. Will i have to bring them in separate ?

Thank You!
